A used truck can look perfect on the lot and still be wrong for the work you need it to do.
At Double K Sales & Detailing, we want to know how a customer will use a truck before talking about which one to buy. Are you hauling grain from a muddy field? Pulling heavy loads through hills? Running mostly interstate miles? Those answers matter just as much as the mileage, make, and price.
A farmer may need traction a highway truck doesn’t
If you’re pulling out of fields, crossing soft yards, or working through snow and mud, ask about inter-axle and differential locks. They are different features, so don’t assume a truck has both because you see one switch on the dash.
A truck with the right traction equipment may be a much better fit for farm work than a sharp-looking highway truck that struggles to get out of a field. Before buying, have the equipment identified and checked to make sure it works.
Manual or automated? Start with how you drive
Some drivers want a traditional 18-speed manual because they like choosing the gear themselves, especially when pulling heavy loads or maneuvering in challenging conditions. Others prefer an automated transmission for easier driving in traffic and less shifting during a long day.
There isn’t one answer for every operator. And “18-speed” doesn’t automatically mean manual—18-speed automated transmissions are available, too. What matters is the specific transmission model, how it drives, and whether it’s suited to your loads and routes.
Look beyond the transmission
The rear-end ratio, engine, wheelbase, suspension, and PTO or hydraulic setup can all change how useful a truck is for your operation. A truck set up for light highway freight may need expensive changes before it’s ready to pull your trailer or run your equipment.
Before you fall in love with a used truck, make a short list of the specs you need:
- Your regular loads: What do you haul, and how heavy is it?
- Your routes: Interstate miles, hills, fields, farmyards, or a mix?
- Traction equipment: Does the truck have the locks your work calls for?
- Transmission: Does the exact model fit your driving and hauling?
- Trailer needs: Do you need a wet kit, PTO, or other equipment?
- Maneuvering: Will the wheelbase work where you load and unload?
Buy the truck for the job
The cheapest truck isn’t always the best buy if you have to spend money changing its setup afterward. A truck with the right specs from the start can save you frustration every time you hook to a trailer or pull into a field.
At Double K Sales & Detailing in Brookings, South Dakota, tell us what you haul and where you run. We’ll help you look past the paint and find a used truck that fits the work you actually do.
